Hydrocephalus is the build-up of excess fluid (cerebrospinal fluid) in the brain. The additional fluid results in abnormal widening of the ventricles in the brain putting additional pressure on the brain tissues, posing a risk to an individual’s cognitive and physical development. Hydrocephalus can occur due to birth defects or can be acquired in later life. The most obvious indication in babies and children is often a rapid increase in head circumference. Hydrocephalus is most often treated surgically with the insertion of a shunt which drains excessive fluid away from the brain.
At Brainwave we see children with a range of conditions, including those with Hydrocephalus. Typically they are supported by one of our Physiotherapists and Speech and Language Therapists but may also see other members of the team when relevant. Our experienced multidisciplinary therapy team will take the time to assess your child’s needs before establishing shared goals. We will then use our knowledge of neuroplasticity to develop and teach you a home-based programme that you can deliver on a regular basis with our ongoing support.
