Epilepsy & Childhood Epilepsy Syndromes

What is Epilepsy & Childhood Epilepsy Syndromes?

Epilepsy is the most common serious neurological condition. It is usually only diagnosed after a person has had more than one seizure and not all seizures are due to epilepsy. Epilepsy is not just one condition; it is a group of many different ‘epilepsies’ which result in seizures. The causes of Epilepsy can be complex and difficult to identify.

Many of the children we see at Brainwave have epilepsy as a result of a brain injury (such as  Cerebral Palsy,  Childhood Stroke or an  Acquired Brain Injury) or a childhood epilepsy syndrome (such as Dravet syndrome, Infantile spasms/West syndrome, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.

How Can Brainwave Help?

The children we see with epilepsy often have additional physical, communication and learning needs and are supported by our Physiotherapists, Speech and Language Therapists and Learning Development Specialist, but may be supported by other members of the team when necessary. Our experienced multidisciplinary therapy team will take the time to assess your child’s needs before establishing shared goals. We will then use our knowledge to develop and teach you a home-based programme that you can deliver on a regular basis with our ongoing support.
