Chromosome Disorders & Genetic Disorders

What is Chromosome Disorders & Genetic Disorders?

Genetic disorders occur when there has been a change in an individual’s DNA (DNA carries our genetic information). This mutation in a gene or genes changes the instructions for making protein so they don’t work or are missing entirely.

The Different Types of Chromosome Disorders & Genetic Disorders

These conditions include:

Single gene disorders – when a mutation affects one gene cell.

Complex disorders – where there are mutations in two or more genes.

Chromosome disorders – where chromosomes are missing or have changed. These include conditions such as  Down Syndrome, Cri du Chat syndrome, Trisomy 13, Trisomy 18.

Syndromes Without a Name (SWAN) – although not a diagnosis SWAN is a term used to describe those suffering from symptoms of an undiagnosed genetic condition.
