Sensory / Swing Rooms
Both rooms support the child’s ability to process sensory information that can help with the child’s organisation of behaviour and regulation. Both the audio-visual and the swing rooms stimulate the different senses of the body to make the child calm or alert. The rooms are therapeutic spaces to bring positive changes. Children with physical, communication, learning and behavioural difficulties will all benefit with the use if the sensory rooms. At Brainwave, we use them for families who come for assessment. The audio-visual room is available to our families when the child needs a calming space or just during the break times. The swing room requires a therapists presence, so is not freely accessible to families (due to safety reasons, and therefore the swing room tends to be used for assessment).
Sensory Garden
Our Sensory Garden gives children and families who come to Brainwave somewhere to relax and rest both mentally and physically before, during and after their assessment here at Brainwave. The garden is split into two zones, one for individuals with more severe mobility challenge and one for those whose challenges are less severe. There are raised beds and small seats or ‘stepping stones’ which contain plants that give a range of scents and different feels when touched. The garden includes activities for the children to play and experience. We hope the garden will become home to different animals and birds.
